Android 12 Features and Supported Devices: What Used Cell Phone Wholesalers and Retailers Need to Know

android 12

Android 12 Google IO news cropped up in May 2021 when Google released its first Android 12 beta. Three beta releases have followed, with the latest in August. Each release has provided used cell phone wholesalers and retailers with a glimpse into a wide range of Android 12 features.

Android 12 Features Used Cell Phone Wholesalers and Retailers Need to Know About

Used cell phone wholesalers and retailers should expect big things from Android 12. Here are some of the Android 12 features that have been announced or may be in the works.

1. User Experience

Android 12 offers a call color extraction feature to help a user personalize their phone. The feature requires a user to first choose their wallpaper. From here, Android 12 automatically determines which colors associated with the wallpaper look the best and applies them across the system.

Along with call color extraction, Android 12 quickly responds to a user’s touch with smooth motions and animations. Android 12 reduces CPU time needed for core system services by up to 22% in comparison to prior OS releases. It also limits the use of big cores by the OS server by up to 15% in contrast to its predecessors.

2. Security and Privacy

Android 12 features a Privacy Dashboard that provides a single view into a user’s permissions settings and what data is being accessed, how often, and by which apps. Also, Android 12 offers a status bar indicator that shows when user apps are accessing their device’s microphone or camera. An Android 12 user can even grant apps permission to see their “approximate” location in lieu of their exact location at a given moment.

Google has incorporated a Private Compute Core into Android 12, too. The Private Compute Core is a system-level partition that lets a user perform certain types of computing in an isolated environment. This reduces a user’s risk of inadvertently exposing or leaking their sensitive data to cybercriminals.

3. Scrolling Screenshot Support

Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, and other Android devices have provided users with the ability to take scrolling screenshots. However, Google intends to provide the scrolling screenshot feature as a native function on all devices equipped with Android 12.

With Android 12’s scrolling screenshot feature, a user can capture large images of the current page they’re viewing on their device. Android 12 provides a “capture more” button to take a screenshot while scrolling. After a user captures the image, he or she can crop and edit it as needed.

4. AppSearch

AppSearch is an on-device search engine that lets Android 12 users perform searches for content inside applications. It can be used even if a user is offline.

There are two versions of AppSearch: one that offers a local index that is compatible with old versions of Android, and another that provides a central index for Android 12. A user can leverage AppSearch to allow data to be displayed on user interface systems. He or she can also leverage the index to share data with other apps and allow them to search over this information.

5. One-Handed Mode

Android 12’s one-handed mode works in a similar fashion to the one-handed mode in iOS. It allows an Android user to shrink their device’s screen size vertically. In doing so, the user can move their thumb to access buttons, icons, and apps that were previously located at the top portion of their device’s screen.

When utilizing an Android 12 device with one hand, a user can move the top half of their display downward if he or she scrolls down. This provides the user with convenient access to buttons, icons, and apps.

6. Double-Tap

This feature ensures an Android 12 user can control hardware or launch apps by double-tapping the back of their device. It may be exclusive to Pixel phones.

7. Widgets

Android 12 offers a weather widget. Rumors persist about a conversation widget as well.

Android Update Supported Devices

Android update supported devices must be “performance class,” according to Google.

The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are the oldest Pixel phones that will be able to leverage Android 12. In addition, the Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL, Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL, Pixel 4a (5G), Pixel 5, and other new Google handsets can utilize Android 12.

Android 12 Release Date

Google indicated that Android 12 will be released later this year. Android 12 beta 4 has reached “platform stability,” and Android 12’s APIs and app-facing behaviors have been finalized. Some industry experts project Android 12 will become generally available in September.

What Android 12 Means for Used Cell Phone Wholesalers and Retailers

As consumers purchase new devices that support Android 12, they may increasingly trade in their used Android models. Used cell phone wholesalers and retailers can capitalize on opportunities to purchase wholesale Android devices at discount prices.
